Editorial Reviews:

  • The hot new novel in the Black Dagger Brotherhood by the #1 New York Times bestselling author

John Matthew has come a long way since he was found living among humans, his vampire nature unknown. Taken in by The Brotherhood, no one could guess what his true history was-or his true identity.

Xhex has long steeled herself against the attraction to John Matthew. Until fate intervenes and she discovers that love, like destiny, is inevitable.

  • Summary: The one I've been waiting for
  • Comment: Ever since this series began and these two main characters in Lover Mine appeared, I have been waiting for their story. There were times I didn't think they'd ever get together and times I didn't like them. But once I read this book I was caught. It was awesome and everything I didn't know I was waiting for!

  • Summary: Good ridance John!
  • Comment: I am so glad, that John's story has finally come out and FINISHED, that i could pass out from my excitment! If i had to read about John and X-man once more, i would burn the entire series. But anyway....

All this years, i know that a lot of the BDB fans have been waiting, this particular story. Well....it came... and... that's it folks. What a suprise, hah?

It was just a story and a boring one too.I don't know the reasons. The plot, was as usual(too much subplot and mixed sceneries) and to tell you the truth a little bit overated. While reading the book, i couldn't feel the rush that i used to feel with the other stories.

Here is an example. Xhex is a captive and is being mistreated both physically and mentally. Naturally John finds out, about it. And i couldn't care less about his reaction. I can't picture him as a big bad bonded vampire warrior, that will tear apart the offendor of his mate.Probably because Xhex, could do the job better and more efficiently.

I think that Mrs. Ward, tried to assign values to the characters that simply weren't there. She tried to take a man out of John and a woman out of Xhex. A total failure.

A total bummer, if you ask me. Those two, have been in a lot of books as secondary characters and they have been attributed with certain characteristics, over and over again. It's kind of hard, to make a reader, view the characters under a different light with just one story.

The only positive thing, is that we are finally over with this story and we can finally move on, to more interesting characters and better plots, without the romance of John and Xhex, ruing the whole thing.

As for this book?Wait for the paperback ladies and gents.

  • Summary: Best of the Series!
  • Comment: ** spoiler alert ** Truly AMAZING! John is my absolute favorite character and to finally read his story...I'm having a hard time putting it into words. I find myself caring very deeply for John. I loved seeing his progression over the last 8 books from being a lonely and scared pre-trans to becoming powerful warrior, and yet remain recognizable. I can't help but continue to be amazed at Ward's ability to keep her characters so remarkably consistent. His actions and reactions are predictable because he seems so real. And I have to say - the mute thing...makes him even more attractive!

The love story was epic! John and Xhex (which btw I kept on reading her name as "Hex" but I wasn't sure if that was right. JR Ward in an interview does refer to her as "Hex") had such a believable courtship - it was pretty tumultuous and as painful as it got sometimes I'm glad that JR Ward went there. It made it more real and made the reunion that much more intense. I found myself all over the emotional spectrum - more so than any other couple in this series and maybe even beyond this series. Sorry Zsadist and Bella :(

Most of the other side stories were very enjoyable. Quinn and Blaylock - Wow! Rumor says she might write a novella on them - I say write a whole book! The Darius and Thorment flashback was fascinating and meaningful because of the juxtaposition of their past relationship and John and Thorment's relationship, in addition to the tie-in to the symphath world. And finally, even Lash's story was engaging - he's extraordinarily twisted. There was part of me who wanted him to stay alive because not only was he the strongest and smartest antagonist Ward has had, but his previous relationship with the Brothers brought in that emotional element needed to really root for the good guy. The fore-lessers and lessers she has written about in previous books have been boring because their only mission is to kill vampires. It lacks the emotional connection and therefore I find myself counting how many pages will I have to be subjected to in order to get to the good parts.

So my complaints...The "paranormal investigators" story was lame and I felt that was a really roundabout and quite painfully boring way to get him "back" into the story and Xhex's life - sort of. Xhex understanding ASL after just learning the alphabet - totally unbelievable and I was hoping there were more scenes with John (intimately) giving her lessons. And the Darius is John thing - hmmm there was no true revelation. I'm still not sure if he knows it or not - it really lacked closure. I know she tends to move on from characters after their story has been told, but I hope there is some closure with that part of the story in the next book.

I'm glad that I started reading the series when I did because I don't think I could have waited for this one. I'm glad she will be continuing the series - I'll be there to read each and everyone, but now that John's story has been told - I feel very satisfied!

  • Summary: Verily, I believe you have pleasantly surprised me Ward!!!
  • Comment: I have to admit I used to be a big JR Ward fan until she started to butcher the Black Dagger Brotherhood series with "Lover Enshrined" (Phury's story) and "Lover Avenged" (Rhevenge's story). I was rather disappointed with their story and felt Ward might be suffering from ADHD since her plots and themes were very unorganized and unfocused.

Perhaps since my expectations where so low for "Lover Mine", it helped me see how great this book truly was. I wasn't expecting it to be an extraordinary, riveting, exciting, and emotional book but it was and am glad to see Ward really hasn't lost her special touch.

I'm not going to summarize what this book is about. If you are new to the series, start from the beginning with "Dark Lover". If you're not new to the series you already know who and what this book is all about. Okay, here's the sitch. I am going to break down my review with pros and cons.

    PROs:

    * Ward has a VERY big talent in creating characters. No other author I've read (except Karen Marie Moning's Fever series) can do this. Her characters are so real to me. They spark so much emotion out of me it amazes me they are fictitious characters.

    * Although it seems Ward is moving away from the main Brothers (V, Z, Butch, Rhage), they aren't completely gone and very much still apart of the team. I devour anything she throws at me when it comes to the old players.

    * All the plots/sub-plots to this book where ALL interesting. Usually I get bored with the Lesser plots but I absolutely loved Lash as the bad guy. I actually wanted him to succeed a little. I also devoured Blay and Qhuinn's story. YUM!

    * Since Ward has a tendency to expand her story greatly with a bunch of sub-plots, I felt "Lover Mine" was extremely more organized than her last two books. I think it had a better flow.

    * I believe Ward has eased up on her F-bombs and name dropping. However her repetitive words (i.e. Verily, man of worth) or her urban words ( i.e. sitch, beni) are a new thing all together.

    CON's:

    * There are still some holes in her story. What is up with JM having some of Darius's memories? And what is with JM being telekinetic? Did I miss something?

    * I HATE, repeat, HATE when the story is getting really good then I turn the page and she has switched to a different plot.

    * Wards reoccurring theme is the whole ying and yang. The Omega who is always evil wearing a white robe and the Scribe Virgin being so pure wearing a black robe. However the Scribe Virgin is not really that pure so shouldn't it be the same with the Omega? Shouldn't he do some good deeds to create that balance?

I usually find more faults in her books but I didn't see that many in "Lover Mine". I have been rather cynical in the past towards Ward. I regret being so negative because she really is a great writer. No other author can produce such an emotional and passionate response out of me and for that I thank you Ms Ward.
